You're listening to Diva Tonight with Carlene Humphrey, a relationship podcast with a focus on life, love, and friendship. Welcome to Diva Tonight.

Carlene

Hi, I'm Carlene, and this is Diva Tonight. I have with me on Zoom the lovely Nancy Griffin. She is the president and founder of Women Worth and Wellness. And she's also an Eagles fan. I did a little bit of digging, and I see that there's one song that really resonates with you. So I thought that was very interesting.

Speaker 1

Of course, of course, of course. Well, Carlene, you and I have had several attempts to connect. So delighted that we are now connected. Wonderful.

Carlene

Oh my gosh. I love that. You know why? Um, doing this podcast has been amazing. Like you said, I'm here at home. I get to talk to you and meet so many great people like yourself. And so I appreciate your patience with me. And, you know, the work that you do. You have had, I guess, over 30 years. Like you're you started in the business when I was like a little a little wee one. I wasn't even like 10 yet, you know? Exactly, exactly.

Speaker 1

Exactly.

Carlene

So wealth management, that's your specialty. You're a financial advisor, and your background is exponential to say the least, right? And I just want to know, as someone who is a financial advisor who helps women, what is the most important thing you think that we should consider in this year, like 2026?

Speaker 1

Well, the most important thing is to step into the ring. And the ring is simply get in the middle of it all. Like women go, oh my goodness, this is too much, this is overwhelming. I don't know where to begin. I'm not going to focus on this today, another day. I'll I'll deal with it another time. But don't step right into the ring immediately and make it a triple A1 priority for you. And that simply means, you know, the one thing that I advocate is that you work with a trusted wealth advisor. And I'm a certified financial planner. And one of the ways that you can find a trusted wealth advisor, even if you're working with somebody now, smart women always get a second opinion, is Google CFP near me, CFP near me. And up will come two or three names. So check them out, do some research, meet with them. And if they say you don't have enough money to work with me, my minimum is whatever, then you say, okay, to whom would you refer me? So when I say in the ring, that means get in the middle of asking all those questions and keep going until you find that trusted wealth advisor. Now, Carlene, from the research that you did on me, you probably noticed that I make a triple A1 priority on your health before your wealth. Because more and more we cannot afford to be sick. And that's why making sure that your health is your job one. Women don't like to be called selfish, but you have to be selfish and look after yourself so that you can give that much more to everybody else that you want to look after.

Carlene

Yeah. You know what? It's true though. They both go hand in hand. And when you're struggling, like I mean, right now I'm not in the best financial condition. You know what I mean? But all the things that you need when your health is not at your best is in terms of your finances too, which is super important. Like everything in life, like you know, if you need to see the doctor, if you need to take time off work, and like I have this condition where some of it's not covered with OHIP, you know what I mean? So being anemic and certain things like that. So I think what you're saying is so true. And I see that you have a few events coming up, you know, to help women, because you advocate for female empowerment. You know what I mean? You have a lot of workshops coming up, and I think it's important to band together because I feel like we're in a society where people often compete with each other. And why do you think that is? Why, why do why, as women, we are always competing against each other?

Speaker 1

Well, the number one person you need to compete against is yourself, really. Like how am I doing now and how can I do so much better? And really focus on yourself. Because when you go to a new doctor, they'll do blood work. They want to find out what is your profile. Same thing when you go to a wealth advisor. They want to know all your assets and liabilities, your aspirations, your plans, all those sorts of things. They also want to know how healthy you are because really, really proper wealth advisor will ask you really important questions like what is your plan if you're diagnosed with breast cancer or diagnosed with colon cancer or diagnosed with heart. What what what will what will happen if that diagnosis comes through to you? What about a premature disability? What about premature death? So a total wealth plan includes all of those what ifs being addressed, and you may not have enough money to both do your retirement plan as well as covering for those health plans or those health challenges. You may want to start with the health challenges first because you get older and all of those what-ifs will be covered with insurance, the older you get, the more expensive it becomes. And that's why it's easy to toss them aside. You know, what happens if it's the day after you're diagnosed with something and you haven't put those coverages in place? So all I'm doing is saying, work with the total wealth advisor to make sure that, you know, they they have credentials, expertise, experience. They also have a fiduciary responsibility to serve all of their clients exceptionally well. And so that's why you need to find that right person who's going to help you. You know, I would think that most people's finances are not in the perfect order they want them to be in. But as long as they're working towards getting them in perfect order, and often it takes time, that is the triple A1 priority. Yeah.

Carlene

You know, with finances, I feel like it's it takes discipline. Don't you believe that? Like I mean, definitely. It's like starting a new habit, which is not what we're conditioned to do. And so is that why you keep saying get the assistance of a financial advisor and then find someone that's working with your budget in mind? Is that why you say that?

Speaker 1

Working with your budget and your best interests. Yeah. Your budget and your best interests, and then have regular reviews. I would suggest every six months or so. And these days it's so much easier to do a review. You know, these days I don't have clients that I'm looking after from a wealth management standpoint. I have my women worth and wellness business where I bring a lot of things to individuals' attentions. But when I had my wealth advisory business, we had to schedule appointments to meet. And so those people would come and meet me at my office, or I would go and meet with them. And it was a big deal to think of all the time that was spent traveling here, there, and wherever. Whereas now you can email all the documents to your client, and then you schedule a Zoom, and then you go through them all so you have an update. And that's also when that wealth advisor will say to you, Carlene, are we still on track with what we talked about six months ago? Or has anything changed in your scenario that I should be aware of? And then obviously that person will respond with, okay, well, then let's carry on with what we've got in place, or they will say, okay, well, given this new information you're giving me, this is what I think we should take a look at doing. So really important dialogue and really important confidential dialogue that you will have with that person so that they can serve you the very best way, but only when you give them your information. So their job is to look after you. You are their client.

Carlene

That's so true. Definitely. We talk about like wealth management and getting your finances in order, but another thing that is important is, you know, having a budget, right? And I think that's to say the least, with every successful person, they have a budget. Like when you were in business, right? You always had a budget. And I think that's the thing that most of us don't always focus on, like keeping up with the budget. And what's your advice on that? Like with maintaining an overall budget? Because you you mention a couple of things, but I think that's important too, right?

Speaker 1

Well, sometimes we go off our budgets because that shiny bubble comes in front of us and you say, Oh, yeah, no, I definitely need one of those. Actually, as a matter of fact, I need two of them because they're on sale now. And so, you know, when you work with a wealth advisor, they will build that into your plan and they will remind you. They will remind you, Carlene, okay, what is more important here? You know, at the end of the month, you've got X dollars left over. How are you going to spend those dollars? Are you going to go for the baubles when they come dancing by? Or are you going to set it aside and top up some of your savings? So again, you know, I always say not even dentists do their own dental work and you're trying to figure this out all by yourself and go get somebody to help you and make sure it's the right person. You know, if they don't treat you well and you don't have that great feeling, then keep looking. Keep looking for that perfect person because they'll make all the difference in your life. They will really help you.

Carlene

I have a scenario. So I I saw one. Um, I'm not talking to that person now, but I was getting um assessed by one financial advisor, and he gave me like the great framework. But at the time, I my finances in terms of work, I didn't have enough work to catch up with the debt that I had. And then he's like, Oh, I can't work with you right now.

Speaker 1

Then go work with somebody else. That's when you go and get a second opinion. You go and get a second opinion. And you and they and they will lower the microscope and you will say, you know, my wealth scenario is not what I want it to be, but I definitely want to start right now for a better reality in the future. In the past, I've had a lot of debt. I started to bring it down, but at the same time I'm bringing my debt down, I really want to start building for the future and protecting myself from a health-related challenge. And so that's why you go CFP near me, chartered or certified financial planner near me. And, you know, when you book the appointment, you just say, I really want a second opinion. And and say to that person, if you've got a minimum, you know, maybe I don't have enough money to invest with you. If you have a minimum, who who else would you recommend that might be suitable for me to meet with? Right, right. So keep asking, keep, keep, keep asking until you get that sweet spot. And once you get that sweet spot, you'll have a whole new level of confidence in terms of how you deal with everything that you've got to make it work for you to the max.

Carlene

No, that's great advice. So, right now, what is your focus? Are you focused more on workshops or events where you bring women together? You do have a few events coming up. So is that your main focus?

Speaker 1

Okay, this this year, last the last six months, I've been doing probably five to ten podcasts per week with primarily women all over the world. And what I've realized is this brand is stronger than ever. You know, often people will say, How in the world did you ever know to connect health with wealth? Well, for me, it's kind of a no-brainer, but the more we see those health-related resources dwindling, the more important it becomes for us to make our health the one priority. You know, it's very difficult to get a family doctor. It's very difficult to get health-related uh information to help you be well. So that's why I spend a lot of time talking about what do we need to do in order to be well. But the most important thing is that people realize they've got to make it a triple A1 priority. Number one priority. Then of course the second is the whole wealth scenario. But as a result of all of these podcasts, coming into a new year, I thought my number one goal is to amplify this brand and everything that it is. For example, in some podcasts, I've spent a lot of time talking about you are worthy. Like women are just not stepping up. Well, what's that all about? Let's spend some time talking about that. How can you become worthy? Well, how you can become worthy is again making sure that you've got your own plan in place. For example, if you're donating to a charity, that is a tax deduction, which means you're minimizing the amount of tax that you're paying. Once you are doing a charitable donation, that also enhances your net worth or your self-worth, rather, because you're in a position of giving. And more often than not, the person who is giving is getting just as much a benefit from that transaction as the person who's receiving it. And here we are 30 plus years later from when I started this brand, where women's philanthropy is a bigger, bigger deal than ever, because women are earning a whole lot more. They're also starting to inherit. And how do they know how to steward all that new wealth that has come in under their jurisdiction? So there are all kinds of things going on at with for women at so many different levels. But my whole thrust is what the brand is about, which is women's health and wealth, net worth and self-worth, philanthropy and legacy planning. And then you circle right back to, okay, if you care about women's health, maybe you want to do a big charitable donation or philanthropic statement into your local hospital or the Heart and Stroke Foundation or whatever. But treat it as a whole, holistic brand that has all those different aspects to it. So my series this year is the word is amplify, and how I'm choosing to do that is by doing a speaker series where we will have one or two women speaking each month. And this is the year of the horse. So these women have achieved a lot, so they are definitely accomplished. But the thing is, they're not retiring and sitting back and saying, Well, I've done it, I've pretty well done it. They're still reaching for more. They have aspirations to make the world a better place through all the things that they're choosing to do. And each one of them is choosing to do something completely different. So all of this I want my guests to appreciate is helping them realize that they've got unique ability, that they've got unique opportunity within their world. So let's focus on it and let's let's make it a priority and let's bring it together.

Speaker 3

Diva Tonight, glamour for your ears.

Speaker

You were not born to be broke. So why does building wealth feel so difficult? Most of us grew up learning how to earn money, but not how to build wealth. Wings of Abundance helps you rewrite that script. Inside, I share the exact mindset and practical steps to shift from lack to raise your self-worth and to open the door to overflow. Start healing your relationship with money. Grab your copy and step into abundance on your own terms. To get your copy, click on the link in the description or purchase on Amazon.

Carlene

So you mentioned the year of the horse, and I saw your newsletter, and I think that's like very interesting. You know, I don't really follow Chinese astrology to a certain extent. Um, I know a little bit about it, but what do you know about the year of the horse?

Speaker 1

Well, neither do I. But this popped up. This popped up. Whenever it pops up, you kind of take a look at it and go, Oh, well, that's interesting. Yeah. Last year was the year of the snake.

Carlene

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Well, but again, the year of the snake has opportunities as well because it's all about shedding that skin. And so shedding that skin and moving into the year of the horse is such a huge opportunity because one of the aspects is no more planning, it's action, it's positive momentum, it's being fearless, it's having courage. It's all of the things about stepping up and stepping into your reality and really amplifying it so that you can make your own world better. And so over the year, we're going to have all these different guest speakers. They're they're amazing. And then we're going to have one event on December the second in the GTA, location to be determined, where it will be at crescendo. And really what it was starting to feel like for me is different instruments in the symphony, in a symphony. So you've got a French horn, and then you've got a uh violin, and then you've got drums, and then you've got, I don't know, whatever. Think about it. But at the end, when it all comes together in that whole piece of music, it really is a crescendo where you've taken it to the max, everything has come together, and it's like, wow, this is amazing. This is amazing. And and at that in-person event, a lot of these guest speakers will be present, and so it's an opportunity to meet with them one-on-one. So our pricing is $50 per month, or you can have the whole series for $500, and that includes the one-day in-person event, which will be priced at $395.

Carlene

When you have these events where there's other women who are there to promote and to uplift other women, what kind of person do you think these events are for? Like, I don't want to marginalize anyone or anything, but I think what I want to know for you is what you think is important to the listener. Like whoever's listening right now, if they think that this would benefit them and if they're having any doubts, what do you say to them?

Speaker 1

Okay, well, I'm a connector and an influencer. That's how I define myself. Okay. And so these women's virtual speakers events are for every single woman. Every single woman. Because once they come and hear this guest speaker, they may go, oh my goodness, this would be perfect for blah, blah, blah. Should we have a lady who's in Glasgow, Scotland, who's an international philanthropic consultant, and she's a gem. She's they're all gems. She's going to talk about what she's doing globally, because she goes into different institutions and helps them with their philanthropy, which is attracting more funding so they can bring their best forward. And at the end of the month, we've got Adrian and uh her whole whole business is called I Am Unbreakable. So again, you know, every single one of these speakers is exceptional, really exceptional.

Carlene

Wow. I feel like there's a reason that we finally connected, because I've in a in a lot of ways from doing this podcast, I don't think I would have met the people I've met. But I feel like through talking to you, that in some way I feel like I could connect you to other women who are in business. And, you know, like the one guest I had, Amy Beckley, she created her own brand through her own medical background. It's called Proved Test, and she helps women get hormone testing. So she created a hormone test for you, a home kit that you can have at home, uh, do the test at home. And she also created progesterone supplements because she was having issues through her own, sorry, she was having issues with um having a baby, right? And so yeah. So what is what is your legacy and what is what makes you unique? And and how, like I'm asking you more than one question, and how have you connected with so many women over the years?

Speaker 1

That's a really good point. I think one of the most, and it's true, it's true. My virtual assistant is fabulous. She lives in Edmonton, she's terrific on marketing and social media and organizing and all those sorts of things. So when it came time for a website, I didn't want her doing the website because it takes away from all the other work she's doing. So I I uh located this other person locally who could do it. So Crystal is speaking with Andrew, and I'm listening. And Crystal said, Nancy knows absolutely everyone, and if she doesn't know them, she introduces herself to them. And it's so true. But the most important thing is you're establishing relationships with other people. Never, ever, ever, ever bring forward anything negative. Never be a complainer. Never say, Oh, I was trying to do this and that didn't work out. The other people you're connecting with don't have time for what's not working for you. So you always bring your best forward. And I tell people that you live your life like a split screen scenario. Don't let that negativity come into play. Just fade it to black. Get it out of here. Deal with whatever you have to, but do not dwell on it. And then default to something that is positive. And once you focus on something that's positive, like I'm alive today, I'm not stuck in the ditch somewhere. You know, how can I make the most of this um silly snow day? Keep focusing on more positives. The other thing that I really encourage people to do, which I've always done, is help somebody else achieve what they're trying to accomplish. So give more than you take. Go out of your way to help others. And that all will serve you well. People will spend time with other people who are positive, but they don't want to spend a lot of time with people who are, you know, who are negative or complaining. And even even a negative comment in passing is is is not is not right. Not right. I mean, certainly you can complain about the weather. We all do that. But

Carlene

Canadian virite, you know?

Speaker 1

Exactly. But if you say, you know, my life is just not, you know, blot like you're not a therapist. You're not a therapist. So don't put that on to somebody else. So give more than you take. Always be as positive as you possibly can be, and always be a champion for others. It's so simple. Once you get that mindset, it's very, very, very easy to keep on going.

Carlene

They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And, you know, you've gotten to here and now through, you know, courage and resilience and um just, I guess, tenacity, because clearly you were working in an industry that's very competitive. You know what I mean? Proctor and gamble. And, you know, I think in that time period, it was maybe more up, like there were a lot of opportunities. And in this day and age, with the change with technology, how do you think that women should adapt to the way things are now?

Speaker 1

Well, I read a great article in the Globe and Mail, probably about three or four Saturdays ago, maybe three Saturdays ago. And it was all about young people feeling that they've missed out, like they just don't have the opportunities that the generations ahead of them have had. And they said, on the contrary, like there's so many messes in this world. It's that Gen Z crowd that are going to clean them all up. So that's why focusing on your unique ability, your unique ability has come forward in a different set of circumstances and at a different time than those ahead of you. But that that is your opportunity to shine. So that's why you take in the world around you. You take in who you are, what you love to do, and think about how you can amplify who you are and what you can do. You know, should I take some courses? Should I connect with this person? What should I do? But really focus on uh bringing your uniqueness forward and amplifying it. And never feel that you're missing out because now you've got a whole new unique experience. You know what it's like dealing with an old timer? They have no clue how to make anything work from a technological standpoint. And the first thing they do when they see a young person is like, Do you have a couple of minutes to help me out here? Okay. So that's the difference. So the young person has got that unique ability. So bring it forward. Use it. I think AI is going to be fabulous, especially as it pertains to our health, because we're going to get some uh some new reads on uh, you know, what our health scenario is and what we might do about it. So all I'm saying is is don't feel you're missing out. Feel that you do, in effect, have a unique opportunity to engage with what in the world is needed at this at this point in time.

Carlene

Okay. That is some great advice. You said in the beginning that women should focus on their health. There seems to be an issue right now with finding a family doctor. What is your advice on that?

Speaker 1

My advice is if you called 911 right now, you would know which hospital you're going to.

Carlene

Yeah.

Speaker 1

So I would I would connect with that hospital. I would go in and I would just say, are you offering any seminars that pertain to people being healthy? And if they and if they and if they say no, just say, Well, would you be interested in me organizing something? Is there a doctor who would be a guest speaker and then organize something? Do it on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday. Like, don't sit around and wait for the world to come to you. Get in the middle of it. And you will be amazed at the people that you meet when you do that.

Carlene

Wow. That is quite the advice, Nancy. I mean, you are wise, very wise. I mean, I don't even think that people would think to do that because that is the ongoing struggle right now. And I I'm lucky that I have a family doctor, and someone asked me because she says she doesn't have one. And there are a few clinics I found that are taking on new patients. So I gave her one of the flyers that I saw, and hopefully she goes to that clinic. You know what I mean? That's the only way how. But yeah, it seems to be a very in demand right now, you know, finding a family doctor. A lot of people are struggling with that. And so what you just mentioned, right, there is flip the script.

Speaker 1

Yeah. Flip the script. And even those family offices, uh, go into them. Think of all the people that are coming in. You know, if I organize something, is there somebody who would be a guest speaker? And so all you and and do it at their facility, they probably have a room. If they don't, then, you know, maybe maybe the hospital does. But you know, once you get that mindset, you'll make it work, you'll find a way. And, you know, Tim's can donate the coffee, whatever. But we're all in this together. And and nobody walks around saying, I don't want you to be healthy. Everybody wants to be healthy. It's just that that whole mental anguish of finding that health practitioner to help you out is a big challenge. And it's a challenge for them as well, because they know they've got expertise to offer, but they know because they're in so much demand that it's overwhelming for them. So maybe you can find a way to lighten the load for them and have them as a as a um an expert to talk about whatever.

Carlene

Yeah. Wow. I am just blown away. I have one more question for you. As someone who brings women together, you know, ambitious women, women all over the world, and from your experience from being on other podcasts, and what is the one thing you've noticed that women in their 40s need to work on?

Speaker 1

The whole aspect of menopause is overwhelming, really overwhelming. And that's a and you know, for example, if that's a key question for you, yeah, then do a seminar on menopause because there's so many different aspects to it. And when all these symptoms come up, women will find a way to disappear. Like nobody wants to be feeling unwell, or nobody wants to appear unwell because these symptoms have taken you over when you're in a a public setting. So if a woman knows that's about to happen, they will excuse themselves. They will just they just won't show up. So there's so many different aspects to that whole topic. And it isn't just your 40s. Sometimes it starts in your 30s, and sometimes it keeps on going until you're seven. You never know. So the key question with your doctor is who is an ideal menopause resource that I might uh arrange an event with? You won't you won't believe the number of people who will come who will be very, very interested in that.

Carlene

You just gave me food for thought. So I definitely have my yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely.

Speaker 1

And and really the simple idea is that you flip the script. Like you just think, what else can I do? What else can I do as a leader? And you know, one of the things that I did was daring and caring leadership, did an event on that again, had guest speakers, but really the essence of daring and caring is just stepping up. Like do something, don't wait for the world to come to you and make it all right. You've got the potential to do something yourself.

Carlene

Yes, I certainly do. I actually do see that you did do a workshop on menopause and perimenopause. I did this last year, which was very interesting. I I wish I had seen that then, but I think the way of the world is that we're here and now, and there's a reason, right? That you meet people that you do, and you are definitely a trailblazer, and I appreciate you being a guest on the show and sharing your insights. Hey, I'm Carlene, and this is Diva Tonight with special guest Nancy Griffin. If you are interested in any of the workshops that she has upcoming this year, any this month or the months to come, you can send her an email at Nancy at women'sworthwellness.com, or you can send her a message on Facebook or Instagram. And you can follow her at women's women worth and wellness. That's women worth and wellness, and let her know that you would like to join the workshop. Again, I'm Carlene, and this is Diva Tonight.
